South of Midnight - Flytrap (Hazard)

Another hazardous asset for Compulsion Games' South of Midnight! During my time working for Onyx Studio as a freelance 3D vegetation artist, I was honored with the task of creating this lovely fella.

The animation and sound effects were done by Compulsion Games' amazing artists.

I was responsible for providing the finished asset in a neutral pose. This included sculpting the high-poly meshes, creating the low-poly meshes that were suitable for animation, texturing, and adding some foliage on top. The grass was made by me. I also painted the mask for the moss material that brings all of the parts together inside the engine. The moss material was created by Compulsion Games.

The hibiscus flowers were provided by Tamara. The palmetto leaves and daisy flowers were provided by Aadil. Both of them are linked below, please check them out as well!

I learned so much during this challenging and educational task. For the high-poly sculpt in Zbrush, I tried out new techniques like creating custom 3D brushes for the stitches or working with the fabric simulation to place individual patches of fabric onto the body of the plant. To bring as much detail as possible into the individual patches, I worked with the surface noise feature, using fabric alpha textures (linked below).

I am very grateful that I got the chance to contribute to this beautiful game, and a big THANK YOU goes out to the wonderful people of Compulsion Games, Tilman Mielsch (our technical artist who made sure everything was moving properly), and Jim Feenema (our lead artist who supported and taught us).
